WELCOME TO THE TRENCHES
A podcast and newsletter where founders walk through the hardest stretch of building their company… what broke, what it cost, and what they'd do differently. Every issue is one operator's story, written down so you can use it: the hire that fixed the problem, the number that told the truth, the decision they waited too long to make.
If you're building something and to hear from other successful founders on how they built their companies, subscribe below.
Creating a Format That Survives Busy
Most founders reinvent the wheel every time they sit down to publish. A tip today, a story tomorrow, a rant the day after, each one starting from a blank page and a fresh decision about what this piece should even be. It is exhausting, and it quietly guarantees you never become known for anything, because there is no pattern for anyone to recognize.
The founders who build real authority do the opposite. They find one format they can run again and again and they make it theirs. Here is why that works, and how to build yours.
1. A format is a promise people can anticipate.
When your content follows a recognizable shape, your audience knows what they are getting before they click, and anticipation is the beginning of loyalty. The weekly teardown, the Monday lesson, the recurring case study, the fixed way you turn one client conversation into one post. The specific shape matters less than the fact that it repeats. A pattern is what turns a scroll-by into a follow, because people follow things they can count on.
2. A format removes the hardest decision you face.
The blank page is where most content dies. A signature format kills the blank page, because you are no longer asking what should I make today. You just have to ask, “what goes in the shape I already built?” That single change is the difference between publishing when you feel inspired and publishing every week no matter what, and consistency is what compounds.
3. A format is how recognition stacks.
Scattered content resets your reputation with every post. A repeated format lets each piece reinforce the last, so the tenth installment lands on ten prior ones instead of standing alone. Over time, the format itself becomes associated with you, and that association is the asset. People start saying you're the one who does that thing, and that sentence is worth more than any single viral hit.
Pick one shape you can sustain, name it if you can, and run it long enough for people to notice the pattern.
The goal is to become the person who reliably delivers one valuable thing, in a way only you deliver it.

"The Proof Drop"
Most content is built on assertion. We tell people what works, what matters, what they should do, and we expect them to take our word for it.
The trouble is that everyone is making claims, and claims are cheap. Proof is what separates you from the noise.
This week, take one post you would normally publish as pure advice and add a single piece of concrete proof. Not more claims, evidence. A real result you got. A specific number from your own work. A direct quote from a customer. One line that shows the thing is true instead of just saying it is.
Publish it and track saves, replies, and profile visits against your recent claim-only posts over the same window.
The hypothesis is that evidence outperforms assertion. A reader can dismiss an opinion, but a specific result is harder to argue with and much harder to forget. Proof does the persuading that adjectives cannot.
One post.
One piece of real evidence dropped into it.
A direct read on whether showing beats telling in your feed.

Automation Won't Save a Voice You Haven't Built
There is a particular kind of founder I keep seeing right now. They have every tool, every shortcut, every system for producing content faster than ever, and almost nothing worth saying.
They have automated their way to a souless personal brand.
The heart and soul of the brand, the personality, come first… the tools come second.
A tool pointed at a clear perspective is a multiplier, because it helps you say your thing more often and more clearly. A tool pointed at no perspective just helps you flood the world with content that sounds like everyone else who owns the same tool.
Build the voice first.
Earn a point of view sharp enough that people would recognize it without your name attached.
Then reach for the tools to carry it further.

Instagram Cracks Down on Undisclosed AI Profiles
As of a policy that took effect August 31 and is being enforced this week, Instagram now requires profiles built around AI-generated personalities to carry an "AI-generated profile" label.
Accounts running as undisclosed AI personas risk losing recommendation eligibility and having their reach restricted, while creators who add the label are not penalized.
The rule targets AI-based identities, not human creators who simply use AI tools in their work.
The effect is a clear line drawn between using AI to help make your content and passing off an AI persona as a real person without saying so. The platform is treating hidden synthetic identity as something to suppress, and disclosure as the price of staying discoverable.
The takeaway for founders is that transparency is quietly becoming a distribution requirement, not just an ethical nicety. As platforms get better at detecting synthetic accounts, the safe and increasingly rewarded position is to be openly human, use tools in the open, and never make your audience wonder whether the person they are following actually exists.
