One of the hardest parts about building a personal brand is deciding what to write about.

Most people look at what they already know or what they potentially want to be an expert in.

But here’s the truth that most people need to realize right away…

You don’t “find” your niche.

Unfortunately, your niche doesn’t slap you in the face and jump out at you like we think it should.

It’s elusive… but I promise you, it’s out there.

It only reveals itself after long periods of consistent action and iteration.

You need the courage to let your niche eventually find you.

For example, let’s think about it this way:

Let’s say your niche is sitting there, waiting to present itself at step 5.

If you never start, take action, and build something, working your way up from step 1 to step 4, you’ll never make it to step 5, and therefore, never find your niche.

So, be different than most people… just start. Once you start taking action in a positive direction, you naturally gravitate toward areas where your skills, passions, and expertise align.

Instead of waiting for your niche to magically appear, embrace the journey of discovery and iteration.

Lean into your interests, experiment with different projects, and pay attention to what resonates the most with you and your audience.

So, what are some action steps you can take based on the information above?

Let’s go through some you can get started with right away:

  1. Create Compelling Content: Content is king when building a personal brand. If you want to build a following and a brand, start by providing high-value content that helps other people.

  2. Choose the Right Platforms: Less, but better. Focus on 1-2 platforms at first, like X and LinkedIn. Focus your efforts on building a presence on those platforms rather than spreading yourself too thin across multiple channels.

  3. Engage with Your Audience: Be active in the replies. Respond to comments, messages, and mentions. Along with building genuine connections, you can learn and hear from your audience.

  4. Consistency is Key: Stay consistent with your posting schedule and messaging. If there’s one thing that separates most people, it’s their level of consistency. Always choose consistently good over occasionally great.

  5. Monitor and Analyze: Keep track of your social media metrics to understand what content performs best and how your audience is responding. This is how you can begin to see more of what your audience wants from you.

  6. Stay Authentic: Above all, stay true to yourself and your brand values. Authenticity is crucial in building a personal brand. Watch for trends, but if they don’t align with your values, don’t indulge in them.

While a short one today, it falls directly in line with the advice that I give to nearly everyone who’s getting started.

(And the advice I wish I received when I was starting).

That’s it for this week’s edition of the Legacy Letter.

Until next time... Keep building,
