Ready to Quit Your Job?

Here's the step-by-step to do it

If you want to quit your job and live on your own terms (this is for you).

I can write this roadmap because I did it over the last 3 years.

Now let’s dive in:

First off you have to decide why you want to quit.

If it’s because you think it will be easier, you’re not going to make it.

Building your own business and creating an income stream for yourself your is 10x harder than clocking into a 9-5.

BUT (BIG BUT HERE)

You do have freedom of where you want to live and how you spend your time.

My why was simple:

I only got to see my kids for a few hours a day and had to ask permission to go on vacation.

Plus I didn’t see a path to financial freedom unless I went Dave Ramsey style and lived like I was in financial prison.

If your why is living on your own terms, please keep reading.

Now assuming you have a job, you have to decide what you are going to do when you aren’t on the clock.

Some jobs you can get are outcome-based and not attendance-based (this is best for building your own thing).

Now you will be putting all your additional time into replacing your income.

  • No Netflix

  • No video games

  • No mindless TikTok

Every ounce of energy that isn’t your family or job should go towards learning a skill that you can sell.

Don’t try to invent something, find a skill that has high demand.

When I was starting out it was:

  • Ghostwriting

  • Email marketing

  • Sales and lead generation

These are still true but now we see things like AI implementation, YT and podcast services, and community building.

I’ve also seen people take well-known markets like interior design or fitness coaching and just sell a better experience to higher-paying clients.

Okay now you have a skill, you need to find people that will pay you.

My first client paid me $200 because I was still trying to figure out how to deliver the service.

But, eventually, once I mastered it I was able to charge more because I could provide better ROI.

To get clients you should be writing content on X or LI.

I chose X so I could remain anonymous and not get judged by my 9-5.

Daily you should be posting 1-3 posts with a mix of long-form and short-form content directed at potential clients.

On top of this you should be:

  • Commenting on other accounts where clients hang out

  • Sending 50-100 DMs to get your first 5 clients

  • Don’t get cute with the DM

Say something like:

“Hey Clifton,

I am a ghostwriter and help Founders build their brand on X by creating content while funneling prospects to your business.

Is this a priority for you right now?”

Now the next part is important.

Absolutely crush it for your clients, build a case study, and use it to bring on more clients.

One of my first clients I took from 0 to 20k+ followers in 6 weeks.

I signed 30+ clients from that case study alone (and delivered even more results).

By this point, you should be charging more and saving 6 months of runway before quitting your 9-5.

Once that’s saved, hand in your notice and scale.

Bonus tips:

  • Don’t hire until you can’t possibly do the work yourself

  • You should be taking all sales calls

  • Be better at customer service than everyone you are up against (read unreasonable hospitality)

Final tip:

Yes, this is a lot.

Take it from someone who did it, it’s worth it.

Thanks for reading!

Until next time... Keep building,

Clifton
