I Quit...
From small town Alabama to running a $1M agency
Welcome back to another edition of Branding Daily where I go deep into the depths of brand building, creating content to grow your business, and online entrepreneurship.
I quit.
These are the words I said to my boss of almost 3 years.
March 1, 2023.
It was the hardest (and best) decision I ever made.
But, I didn't get there overnight.
Here is the story of how a guy from Level Plains, Alabama went from corporate ladder to running a $1M agency:
Let's set the scene…
August 2021 I am sitting on the couch in a rental house in Calera, AL.
On paper I was successful:
Great career for a great cause
Wife and two beautiful children
Three college degrees and 5+ years experience
The background was a different story:
Struggling to make credit card payments
Feeling like I had no way to earn more money
Scared that I wasn't going to reach my full potential
So I did what normal people do in this situation…
I started a Twitter profile.
This led to 8 months of:
Spamming affiliate links
Trying Amazon FBA and eBay reselling
Doing everything I could to earn extra cash
Then it happened.
I realized that I was playing this game all wrong.
I was playing small and not thinking long-term.
So, I shifted:
I started writing daily to educate + network
I started to reach out to people ahead of me
I started learning a skill that could help others
This changed everything.
I met mentors who would teach me how to launch an agency, sales, systems, delegation, and lessons on how to scale.
I made my first $1.
Then my first $10,000.
And before I knew it I was in rooms with incredible people, speaking at events, scaling my team, and joining awesome communities like Hampton Founders.
It happened with three main focuses:
1. Defining my Skill + Offer
Mine is ghostwriting and building personal brands that drive attention + revenue for businesses.
The key here is to pick a skill/service and become the go-to person in that field.
Skill switching or bloated service offerings will kill your momentum and keep you from reaching your full potential.
2. Network is King
Once I had the way, I had to find the “who.”
It wasn't going to happen within a 100-mile radius of where I lived.
So I started joining communities, giving insane value, and clients started compounding naturally.
Bonus Tip: In year 1 you need to focus on outreach because nobody knows who you are. Quickest way to scale your business.
3. Find A+ Players
We hosted a retreat for our team this week.
We talked strategy, spent quality time together, and left refreshed and on fire for the future.
You can only go so far alone.
Eventually to scale you have to find A+ players and equip/empower them to win.
This is what has gotten me this far in business (shoutout to the team at Legacy Builder).
